Research

Research in the neurological sciences is a multidisciplinary effort with contributions from clinical and laboratory-based investigation. The research effort in the Department of Neurology at the University Hospital Mannheim is in a phase of rapid growth. The past ten years has seen the development of preeminent laboratories in the areas of neurosonology, MRI (MR-Imaging and -Spectroscopy). Clinical research is actively underway in identifying risk factors for dementia and cognitive impairment, acute and preventive management of stroke, immunotherapy for MS, drug therapy in Parkinson's and other movement disorders, outcome measures in epilepsy.

The importance of scientific work is recognisable from the combined and coordinated international projects supported by funds, both in the present and past, from Europe and the German Research Society and Foundation. Funds from the European Community supported the project DOLPHINS and LADIS. Part projects of the SFB of the Faculty are regularly promoted by the German Research Society (SFB 258, 626) and we have successfully participated within the National Expertise Network for Stroke for many years. Many projects of the National Expertise Network for Stroke are supported by the German Federal Ministry for Research and Education.

For specific research areas and projects, see listings on each page.
